What is an eBike?
An eBike is a power-assisted bicycle that meets all the requirements of the Motorized Vehicle Safety Act. eBikes can look like a conventional bicycle, or resemble scooters and limited-speed motorcycles. They are limited to providing pedal assistance up to a speed of 32 kilometers per hour and are treated as a conventional bicycle, with additional safety and equipment requirements. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has a large eBike FAQ page that provides a wealth of information.

What's so Great About Them?
The eBike has many advantages over other modes of transportation! The main reasons are:
No Gas!
No Insurance!*
No Registration!
No License!
Scooter-styled eBikes are very popular for the above reasons and because you don't have to pedal at all, which is wonderful for people who are unable to pedal due to knee/hip injuries and other impairments. You never get sweaty on a scooter-styled eBike on your way to work, and you never have to struggle up a single hill! Additionally, on a scooter-styled eBike there is usually enough room for 1-2 bags of groceries, and it's also easy to wear a heavy backpack while riding. For people who would rather ride a conventional style bike, by adding electric pedal assistance you gain the advantage of having an easier time pedaling up hills and not getting as sweaty as you would on a non-power-assisted bike.
*while no insurance is required, it is recommended that you ask your insurance company if they will cover you for any accidents you may cause under a personal liability policy. Additionally, it is also worthwhile to ask your insurance company if they will insure your eBike for theft.

But Don't Only Drunks Ride eBikes?
If your license has been suspended or revoked under the Criminal Code of Canada, you cannot legally ride an eBike. Most eBikers have a full G license, but prefer to ride an eBike because it saves money, is a lot more fun, and is better for the environment. The Kingston eBike Enthusiasts encourages all of our members to ride sober and ride safe.

What Should I Do Before Buying An eBike?
Before you buy, we highly recommend that you not only do additional research about riding eBikes and eBike laws on the web (feel free to come ask us questions on the forum!), but that you also visit local retailers to get an idea of what kind of service you can expect if you have problems with your eBike. Ask for a test ride if they offer them, ask what kind of warranty that the bike comes with, ask if they offer maintenance or if you'll be expected to take care of that on your own, ask any questions you have pertaining to eBikes and the law, and ask any other questions you may have. A great retailer will be knowledgeable and helpful!
